Beran Environmental Services has been involved in many streambank stabilization projects throughout the company’s history and therefore has extensive experience in this area. These projects have restored streambanks and floodplains to a more natural state utilizing many different stabilization practices accepted by regulatory agencies and the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission.
Work on the Lantzy Streambank Stabilization and Fish Habitat Improvement project was initiated on 7-13-20 and completed 7-15-20. Personnel from the PFBC were on site to supervise and assist in the installation of a five section, 20-foot mudsill, and a large wood structure with rock toe protection under banks. The installation of the structures was modified as directed by PFBC personnel based on the current condition of the streambanks. Additionally, work was done downstream of the planned mudsill structure taking advantage of a large fallen hemlock and using R6 and R5 for fill behind the log. The banks were graded to meet the installed structures to the extent possible without compromising healthy existing woody vegetation, under the direction of the PFBC. Following the installation of the structures and bank grading, all disturbance resulting from the restoration effort was seeded and mulched. A total of 200 tons of stone was placed during installation.
The Kersey Run Stream Enhancement Projects involved four sites along Kersey Run in Jay Township, Elk County, Pennsylvania. These stream enhancement sites involved the installation of single log deflectors, log framed stone deflectors, modified mudsills, root wads with log sills and Longitudinal Peak Stone Toe Protection (LPSTP). Bank regrading, seeding, mulching, and riparian plantings also took place during this project.
